Good writing on the web draws in readers. It keeps them interested. It keeps them coming back.

Sadly, there’s not enough good writing on the web. There’s way too much writing that’s sloppy, packed with keywords, and just a struggle to read. With some work, much of that writing could actually be worth reading.

You don’t need to be a great writer to be an effective blogger. I do think, however, that you need be a competent writer, preferably a good one, to be an effective blogger. And I think that you all have it in you to become good writers. It’s not easy. It takes a lot of work. But it’s possible.

On 21 June, 2016 Jam Mayer and I held an evening writing workshop in Auckland. The workshop introduced a number of ideas and techniques that will help you better plan, structure and write your blog posts.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be serializing that workshop in this space.

Here’s what you can expect to learn from this series:

  • Kickstarting your writing with an outline
  • Crafting headlines
  • Writing introductions
  • A couple of ways to tell a story
  • Using active instead of passive
  • Summing up your posts
  • How to develop your voice as a writer

Each post will also include a writing exercise so you can put what you’ve learned into practice.
